E-prescribing is the paperless electronic prescription method recommenced for use by the Australian government. This allows prescribers and patients to use an electronic prescription instead of paper prescriptions. E-prescribing differs from the eScripts you are familiar with in that the electronic record is the legal prescription. With the older eScripts, the paper prescription is still the legal prescription.
Before You Start Using ePrescribing:
Paperless ePrescriptions have additional security and auditing requirements. This means some basic setup is required before you can enable ePrescribing.
You must:
- Set up at least one user as an Administrator for the system.
It is very strongly recommended that at the same time you:
- Set roles for all of your other staff.
These determine the functions they have permission to use. You can choose from a set of standard/default roles, or set up customised roles specific to your pharmacy.
Once these are set up, staff will be able to set their own passwords the first time they use the system after ePrescribing is enabled.
Roles and Permissions
When ePrescribing is enabled, access to functions throughout the system is based on the current user’s (staff member’s) role or roles, which determine their permissions.
For example:
- A Dispensary Technician might have permission for dispensing and data management.
- A Locum Pharmacist might have access to everything except for user management and system settings.
- A Supervising Pharmacist might have access to everything.
Staff members can have more than one role.
For example:
- You might choose to record the various roles each person performs within the pharmacy, even if doing so does not extend any additional permissions.
- You might choose to set up custom roles where each role equates to a specific function. In that model, staff with broad responsibilities such as pharmacists would have multiple roles selected.
