Use this field to enter the name of the drug to be dispensed; if the drug being dispensed is of a different brand from what is prescribed, ensure required conditions for dispensing the drug are met.
This field is disabled if the selected patient is inactive or until a drug is selected in the Item Dispensed field, after which it is conditionally enabled depending on the type of drug selected as the item prescribed. The display format of the drug search result groups appear in a similar manner for items prescribed and dispensed.
Use of the Item Dispensed drop-down list depends upon whether the drug prescribed is:
- Generic (i.e. a chemical name)
- A brand drug
- An extemporaneous preparation.
You can highlight your preferred brands or frequently used drugs so they stand out in lists.
If there are any drugs that you never use, deactivate them so that there are fewer lines to look through in the drug lists. You can reactivate them later in the Drug Organiser if necessary.
You can highlight, deactivate and edit drugs directly from the drug list. When the list is dropped down, press F2 or right-click on a record to display the Actions menu, then choose the required action.
NOTE
If you are using script barcode checking with the barcode check taking place at the end of each script batch, you can scan barcodes on repeat authorisation forms in the Item Disp drop-down list.
Generic Prescriptions
When you select a generic drug (i.e. a chemical name) from the Item Presc box, the Item Disp list drops down automatically to display the brands available. Select the drug you require, then choose OK.
Brand Substitution
When a brand drug is prescribed, the Item Disp drop-down list defaults to the same brand.
To supply a different brand:
1. Drop-down the drug list by pressing Alt+Down Arrow or by clicking with the mouse.
The list shows the brand substitutes available for the brand prescribed, with the cheaper brands at the top.
2. Select the drug you want, then choose OK.
Extemporaneous Preparations
If the item prescribed is an extemporaneous preparation, the Formula box is displayed after the Item Disp drop-down list.
Type a descriptive name for the preparation into the Item Disp box, and the formula into the Formula box.
NOTE
RP extemporaneous items where you just add water or saline do not get the Formula box.
